Today's National One Hit Wonder Day. Whole albums or entire ouvres can be quite impressive, but more often than not, individual songs have the largest impact on us. Which one hit wonders have played a major role in your life?

View 501 Answers

"The Macarena" by Los Del Rio (1996).
Fourth and fifth grade would not have been the same without it.

And, while I couldn't find it in VH1's list, I am certain that "Baby Got Back" was a one hit wonder by Sir Mix A Lot...and without this one, no place where dancing is envolved is complete (i.e., wedding receptions, high school dances, rallys, birthday parties).

Things you are afraid of: failing. dolphins. losing a friend because of something i did. missing out on the plan God has for me. losing sight of who i really am, even if just for a second.

Things that make you laugh: playing taboo far too late at night. playing any game with the people of EPIC. inside jokes. big sunglasses. silly pictures. looking back at pictures of random times with friends. jumping rope. bandanas. jeffrey doyle’s insane sarcasm. walking in the rain with sarah ashley.

Things that make you cry: for sad reasons – death. coming to the conclusion that i didn’t do something to my full potential. getting hurt (both physically and emotionally). for good reasons – God. seeing Him work in young people. seeing something i have wanted for so long become a reality. realizing that at the end of the day, God still loves me: no more, no less.

Things you love: God. family. baby brothers. cousins. best friends. EPIC uth. worship. interning at the church. living with my family. long talks with savy driving around in my car. running through the sprinklers. late nights with friends. spontaneous worship with christian, chrisopher, and savy in my kitchen. texting. watching God work in young people. ice blocking. the Dodgers. USC football. TUHS home football games. fall. tattoos. taking pictures. road trips, especially ones to visit friends.

Things you hate: wearing real shoes. people backing out or flaking out. fake people. saying goodbye to people i am close to.

Things you don't understand: how people can listen to music and not respond in some way. how people can sit at church during worship or a sermon and not pay attention. why people come to church if that’s all they are going to do. calculus. greek, but not for long.

Things you're good at: leading. music. talking. having compassion for the lost. taking direction. learning from my mistakes. creating crafts. taking pictures. smiling. laughing.

Things you suck at: knowing when i am wrong. driving. being able to disconnect from a situation. handing over things when it becomes overbearing.

Right now you are: sitting at work. completely happy with where God has brought me. sad the summer is over. happy to be opening a new chapter with amazing new friends. glad God, and Brimhall, allows me to serve as a leader for EPIC.

Twelve facts about you:
1. i have had at least one x-ray on every part of my body.
2. i share a room with a rabbit. his name is Malt.
3. my baby brother is my best friend. and he is also over a foot taller than me.
4. i moved only once before turning 18. since, i have moved 5 more times.
5. without God, i have no reason to live.
6. i will be going to Zimbabwe next summer.
7. praying with christian matthew lucas changed my life at summer camp oh-eight.
8. i have one real brother, two step-sisters, three step-brothers, and two nephews, one niece.
9. i am closer to my paternal cousins then most people are to their siblings.
10. i could listen to any type of music. i love them all.
11. i am in my last year at cal state bakes.
12. ministry tour oh-eight was possibly the greatest trip of my life.

If you had to give up one of your five senses, which could you live without?

Submitted By [info]newbiepoet

View 500 Answers

in order to answer this question, i will have to go through the five senses and see which ones i CANNOT live without to determine which one is expendable...

to hear - music is my life. without being able to hear things, i would go insane. so, definitely not this one.

to see - at first, i thought that this one would be the one i would give up, but i love photography and reading far too much. while i could learn to read braile, i could not go without photography. so, not this one either.

to touch - i'm on the fence about this one. while i'm not in a relationship right now, i do think that if i ever was in one, i would want to be able to feel while holding their hand, or kissing them. so, not this one.

to taste - i'm not really big on flavor, and if i gave up tasting it would mean much cheaper food for me. i could buy whatever was on sale, regardless of what it was, because i would just need nutrition, not the taste. but i do love me the in&out burger, so i don't know. probably not this one.

to smell - my nose is plugged up half the time anyway now because of my stupid allergies. to i think i might give this one up, but only if it didn't interfere with my tasting abilities.

...your thoughts?

Jack Sparrow. He got off the bloody island TWICE and still didn't use his gun. Plus, he always seems to know where the rum is and how to have a good time. Yes, definitely Jack Sparrow. <3

Care to reminisce about some favorite (or not so favorite) summer memories?

This summer was the greatest summer of my life. I learned so much about myself, and about the company I keep. My summer kicked off with an amazing trip to Ontario, CA and Las Vegas with my youth group for MT 2008 (Ministry Tour). So many inside jokes and memories were created on this trip and it was a great way to hit the ground running for the summer. I became incredibly close with quite a few of our kids at EPIC while the summer continued. And as the summer came to a close, we went to Summer Camp in Pinecrest. Reggie Dabbs, gah! I could talk about his awesomeness for hours, but I'm sure you don't really want to hear all about that. But Summer Camp was a completely unforgettable experience. I am so glad that the momentum we started back in Las Vegas has continued a blasted us through the summer and onto the next school year. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year and 2009 has instore.

If you could pick any TV show that has been off the air to come back for one more season, which show would you pick and why?

There are so many that I love that were not given the proper chance when on the air. I loved Freaks and Geeks, so that is definitely on the list. Also, my cousins and I have been watching Popular lately and I would love for that to come back, too. OH, and I always loved Salute Your Shorts, Hey, Dude, and Pete and Pete when I was little, and it would be awesome for those to make a comeback. =)

Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” He is believed to have called it his greatest literary work ever. Can you write a story in six words?

teleportation.
not just for humans either, for everything. no more need for large crazy highway type things, just teleportation pads/boxes for EVERYTHING. and these would of course have to be mobile (since this is already far fetched, why not take it to the extreme) and be able to be turned off so you can store it without teleporting your storage place.

and, i love the idea of a water proof iPod...

Do you think Heath Ledger deserves the Oscar for his role in the Dark Knight?

Submitted By [info]quinnpuddin

If you know Hollywood at all, you know that they honor the dead at the Oscars even more then they do the living. Plus, I think even if Heath Ledger HADN'T died he would have at least been nominated for his role. Its a shame that people will think he just won the Oscar because of his death, because I think he deserves it. Joker is by far the best character I have seen portrayed on screen in a LONG time. Heath did an amazing job and should go into the record books for it.

What would you consider to be the single greatest invention in the history of the world? Why?

Submitted By [info]brianmorris

This one is unbelievably tough for me. I have so many things that were invented that I love and use everyday. I would have to say that paper and ink (I know this is technically two, but get over it) are the greatest invention. Everything that I love dates back to these two objects. Without them, the printing press never would have happened. Books, writing, and post-its would never be known. So ya, paper and ink. =)

Do you miss anyone right now? What past experiences with this person, or these persons, make it easy for you to miss them?

Submitted By [info]mattbcl

I miss every single one of my kids from summer camp. We spent 5 days together, with every waking moment in each others' presence. We stopped the noise of the world for a brief time and listened inward to what God was telling us. My kids are the best. Camp brought out the best in them, and I miss being around them to experience their youthful joy and their amazing passion. God called them to greatestness this week, and their answer was yes. I know that they are strong, but I worry about the counter-acting strength of their world back home. I know that they need to be on their own to prove to themselves, and to God, that they can stand against the storm. Even though I know this, it doesn't help my fear that some of them won't make it. I wish I could be there to let them know that God will never leave them. I wish I could be there to show them love whenever they feel like the whole world is against them. I miss being able to love on them and show God through me. I know that this is God's will, but it doesn't make it any less tough.

I miss being around my kids 24/7. Even though they are young, their insight into life is unbelievable. I know that I could discuss things with anyone of them, and get amazing feedback because they all know how to listen inward to God. I wish I could've had that when I was their age...but God had a different story in mind for me.

My feelings about the whole issue, along with some dialog with Savannah and Zach, have shown me yet again my call to full time ministry. What I have known was a call to missions of some kind for a while now has been added to. I think I'm called to be involved with missions AND youth. How, you may ask? No clue. But that's my favorite part of how God works.

Lord, not my will, but yours...

I've decided that I am going to not have a list of 100 things to do before I die. It makes me feel like I have to have 100, no more, no less. So, with inspiration from the movie of the same title, I am creating my own "Bucket List." This list will have to specific length. I will add to the list as I think of things. I will keep the list in the same pad of paper for the rest of my life. I will record in this book when and how I complete each item. I will take pictures of me completing the items and will post them with the number of the item in my home somewhere.

This is my determination...

1. i hate dolphins. not other fish too, not sharks, just dolphins. i cannot be near anything that has a dolphin on it, no picures, balloons, dolphin toys, nothing. hearing the noise that a dolphin makes can sometimes send me into a panic attack. to be honest, this fear started with something really small, but has progressed into this strange-ness.

2. i hate people dressed in costumes. i cannot take pictures with them at disneyland, i cannot be around them on halloween. the princesses at disneyland are fine, but if their face is covered with a mask of any kind, i cannot stand to be within 100 feet of them. this one i can explain. i have no idea what kind of person could be hiding other there, and that creeps me out to no end.

3. i hate feet. i don't mind looking at them from a safe distance, but you better not touch me with them or i may fight you. if you just took a shower, it is possible that your feet won't bug me if you just touch me for a second, but dirty feet i cannot stand.
